I shot these photos today in the Russian Museum in St. Petersburg. Just what is it about folk art that's so satisfying? Maybe the natural materials--rock, wood, moss--that hearken to our roots, ashes to ashes, dust to dust? Or child-like subjects that cross all cultures? Russian "mossies" (photo 3) remind me of the fairy creatures American kids like to build in wooded glens.
